A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. The effects of lost school days build up one absence at a time on individual students. Penalties for students who miss school may unintentionally worsen the situation. Any absence, whether excused or not, denies students the opportunity to learn in accordance with the school's instructional program, but students who miss school are sometimes further excluded from learning opportunities as a consequence of chronic absenteeism.1

Stafford Public Schools has adopted a policy regarding student attendance and truancy. The Student Handbook covers in detail the procedures for reporting absences, as well as, attendance to school, excused and unexcused absences, and truancy. The attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently.2
